"Appreciative inquiry" into HR

Appreciative inquiry (AI) is a positive approach to change that focuses on probing an organisations best attributes and practices. Given that I am getting slightly cross about all the negative comments and reports about HR and the HR profession I wondered if we could use this tool to help us understand what is good about being an HR professional?

“AI” helpfully provides a simple model, known as the 4Ds, that I think might help us consider what is good about HR,

1. Discover the "best of what is"— identify where HR’s processes work perfectly.
2. Dream "what might be” — envisioned processes that would work perfectly all the time.
3. Design "what should be"— define and prioritized the elements of perfect HR.
4. Create a Destiny based on "what will be"— design what HR will look like in the future.

So come on folks, what is good about contemporary HR, just what rocks your HR world?

Scott, that's an excellent framework. I have a bunch of client work today, but I'm going to mull this over this evening and get back to you with some thoughts. It's true, it is droll to keep hearing the "Why HR is bad" stories. This methodology that you laid out can work to add a little discipline to "Why HR is good."

Hi Scott
This is my first visit to your blog and what a good start! I am a member of the CIPD but my roles have always been in general management. HR people have either been my clients or colleagues. Many employees still see HR as the place where the more negative things in an employment relationship happen - job losses, discipline, performance appraisal. Managers often point people issues to HR to avoid having to deal with them. So I think it is probably time for HR professionals to do what Frank suggests - lay out and publicise Why HR is good.

It's a pity HR has the reputation they do. We are familiar with Appreciative inquiry and find it works well on a personal level as well as an organizational level. In fact it is also a basis of entrepreneurship. The Appreciative Inquiry is a great formula that can go everywhere, even in our executive training.
